WaPoLabs is the Washington Post unit that experiments with interactive and new media, user experience, and such.

A small group from the labs, including user experience and editor staff, are visiting UNC on Monday, February 27.

They want to " chat with students about the changing media landscape and the work we do."

They will be holding an open discussion session 3:15 - 4:30 in the Freedom Forum Room, 305 Carroll Hall. All interested are welcome to attend.

The first is interesting to me because my favorite thing to do is read. However one of my majors is English and I don't have a lot of time to read texts that are of interest to me outside of class. Therefore, when I do get time to do so I like to have a ready made list of books that have caught my interest and this site helps me to develop this list.

The second is interesting to me because sometimes I just can't take reading anymore because my mind is tired from all of the texts I have to read for my classes and just needs to relax. I used to waste time having to look for what other people think are good movies to watch and then going to watch trailers. But, this site allows me to mindlessly find movies to watch by pulling up the trailers itself. I think both of these sites are ones that will be useful to the class.

Interestingly, visitors can "Watch Online", the 90-minute video, and then read a roundtable discussion by some of the participants in the film. To the right of the comments by the participants is the "Your Thoughts" area, which contains posts by visitors to the site. The tabs near the top left of the homepage contain short videos which expound on the 90-minute video. The topics of the tabs include "Living Faster", "Waging War", and "Virtual Worlds". Within each tab are several subsections, and each subsection contains about half a dozen videos. In the "Living Faster" tab, under the subsection "Where Are We Headed", there is a brief video called "Your Brain on Google", which compares a brain scan of a person when reading a book to when they are using Google. Prague Summer Seminar in Libraries and Librarianship May 20th - June 2nd, 2012

Prague, the magical city of cathedrals, gold-tipped towers, and church domes, is one of the most popular destinations in East Central Europe. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science summer seminar allows library professionals to explore the past, present, and future of libraries and librarianship in the heart of one of the world's most remarkable, yet largely undiscovered, countries.

During this this two-week, residential summer program participants will enjoy lectures and tours related to librarianship in this culturally and academically rich country. In addition to visiting libraries and museums in Prague, the group will also make trips to visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Kroměříž (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/860) and Český Krumlov (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/617) with their historic libraries, castles, and gardens.

Accommodation in the center of Prague allows participants to explore this historic and absorbing capital city during the week, and the surrounding countryside during their free time on the weekends.

The Dilemma of Being a Cyborg

This kind of thing happens all the time now, but three or four years ago it still seemed momentous and thrilling: a sudden argument at a dinner party (something about Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds and iconic mustaches of the ’70s) was quickly put to rest when half the people present picked up their phones and started to Google. Observing this, a friend of mine made what struck me as a very clever remark about our “stegosaurus brains.” It didn’t occur to me that only a dinosaur would delight in a dinosaur analogy.

As you probably already know, but as I only recently discovered while visiting the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles with my increasingly futuristic 3-year-old (who is given to swiping a finger across things like TV sets and laptop screens and declaring them broken when they fail to respond to her touch), the theory that the stegosaurus had a “second brain” that controlled the back end of its body was debunked years ago, long after it was taught to me in grade school. So not only was my friend’s analogy contingent on a discredited theory, it also rested quaintly on an Industrial Age notion: that our phones and other data-storage and network devices are secondary to our actual brains, mere auxiliary boosters bringing up the slow-moving rear of our consciousness, rather than the indispensable space-age (post-space-age?) transmogrifiers we now understand these devices to be.

“We’re all cyborgs now,” the anthropologist Amber Case said in a TED talk in 2010. For thousands of years, she said, tool-use had been “a physical modification of self. Now what we’re looking at is not a physical extension of the self but an extension of the mental self.” Our devices allow us to compress time and space in a way that we’re able to mentally transport ourselves between planes of existence with the touch of a button. (Or, rather, a digital rendering of a button.) Someone told me recently that John Perry Barlow, pre-smartphones, defined cyberspace as like “the place you go when you’re on the phone,” and Case, who grew up in thrall to the idea of instantaneous travel, realized, while writing a thesis on cellphones, that “everyone was carrying around wormholes in their pocket.” As she puts it: “You have a different type of time on every single device that you use. . . . And because of that, you start to dig around for your external memories — where did you leave them? So now we’re all these paleontologists that are digging for things that we’ve lost on our external brains that we’re carrying around in our pockets.”

Recently, in the span of about a week, a friend of mine lost her hard drive and backup drive storing years of work, her entire music collection, her photos and all her e-mail. A few weeks later, duly warned, I watched my glitchy phone finally die — and take with it almost every photo I had ever taken of my daughter since the day she was born. I hadn’t backed up my phone because I couldn’t connect my new laptop to my old external hard drive and had been planning to switch from MobileMe (to which I’d forgotten the password) to iCloud (I was holding off until I could back everything up on a hard drive, not yet purchased). My digital-storage problems had become so internecine that I didn’t stop to consider my photos’ vulnerability until it was too late. Weeks later, I’m still plagued with the back-of-the-mind feeling that one of these days I’ll figure out how to make the pictures reappear as magically as they vanished. My mind isn’t sure how to process the loss because it feels at once real and illusory.

This is the dilemma of being a cyborg: It’s not just that everything we once committed to memory we now store externally on devices that crash or become obsolete or are rendered temporarily inaccessible due to lack of coverage. And it’s not that we spend a lot of time storing, organizing, pruning and maintaining our access to it all. It’s that we’re collectively engaged in a mass conversion of what we used to call, variously, records, accounts, entries, archives, registers, collections, keepsakes, catalogs, testimonies and memories into, simply, data.

“Data” has become the default word used to describe the constantly generated, centrally stored evidence of our existence. I wasn’t surprised to learn that the word “data” comes from the Latin for “to give,” and refers to something that is given or relinquished. It also feels significant that data rests at the very bottom of the so-called knowledge hierarchy — below information, knowledge and wisdom.

For everything that’s gained by our ability to store and maintain more information than ever before, something is lost that has to do with texture, context and association. The science journalist Joshua Foer, author of “Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything,” said in a lecture to the Royal Society of Arts that people once “invested in their memories, they cultivated them. They studiously furnished their minds. They remembered. Today, of course, we’ve got books and computers and smartphones to hold our memories for us. We’ve outsourced our memories to external devices. The result is that we no longer trust our memories. We see every small, forgotten thing as evidence that they’re failing us altogether.” As we store more and more of what makes us us outside of ourselves, he said, “we’ve forgotten how to remember.”

When asked by his interviewer if memory isn’t also a form of baggage, a conduit for suffering or a handicap, Foer responded with two stories. The first is about a man who lost his memory and his ability to form new memories, which made him less human in a way, because “to be a person you have to exist in the dimension of time.” The second story is about a man who could remember everything but had no way of filtering the information. Foer likened this man to a character in a Borges story that concluded that the “essence of being human is not remembering but forgetting.”

Losing data is not the same as forgetting. It happens all at once, not gradually or imperceptibly, so it feels less like an unburdening than like a mugging. Similarly, accumulating data does not feel the same as gaining knowledge, experience or understanding. “What does the inside of your computer actually look like?” Case asked. “Well, if you print it out, it looks like a thousand pounds of material that you’re carrying around all the time. And if you actually lose that information, it means that you suddenly have this loss in your mind, that you suddenly feel like something’s missing, except you weren’t able to see it, so it feels like a very strange emotion.”

Foer said, “What makes things memorable is that they are meaningful, significant, colorful.” Data is weightless and characterless and takes up very little space. The more of it we save, the more we lose the ability to differentiate it, to assign significance and meaning.

I’m pretty sure, for instance, that my husband still doesn’t know my phone number, which he stored on his phone on the day we met, whereas I remember his because he wrote it down for me on a tiny scrap of paper that I pinned to my bulletin board, where it gradually accrued meaning. In my mind, my husband’s phone number is inextricable from his handwriting, and it lives on a jagged-edged, ephemeral scrap that resurfaces every once in a while, usually when I’m looking for something else.

It also used to be that the music I listened to had several visual corollaries — images on album or CD covers, marker doodles and collages on cassette tapes, the arrangement of a shelf or the jumble of junk on the floor of my car. Now, the more music I collect, the more I find myself scrolling, letting the names and titles slide past me, undifferentiated. The blurred scroll evokes nothing.

Maybe this sensation is why, in the past few years, there has been a resurgence of artisanal analog technology; for instance, Deutsche Post DHL, the German postal service and worldwide logistics company, offers a Facebook app that allows users to convert their Facebook activity into a handsome book containing all your fondest social-media memories, converted into, and preserved as, commemorative infographics. There’s also an app called Postagram, which allows you to convert photos from your iPhone into physical postcards, which are then mailed to your chosen recipient. The vinyl-philia of the ’90s and early aughts has been joined by a more recent revival of “cassette culture,” recalling the ’70s and ’80s. On Etsy, physical stationery abounds. Seemingly every bookstore now serves double duty as a fancy-notebook store. And, improbably, Polaroids are back, thanks to the obsessions of enthusiasts who started the Impossible Project, acquiring the rights to continue manufacturing Polaroid film.

Quirky indie revivals notwithstanding, my daughter will most likely never experience her photos, music, phone numbers and letters in the same way that I experienced those things: as physical ephemera to be pinned to bulletin boards, crammed in boxes and stored in attics, imbued with meaning and converted into personal talismans. This unwieldy archive of my past, all my nearly forgotten selves, will eventually be my bequeathed burden to her, I suppose.

Not that I will keep that stuff, of course. One of these days, I’ll scan all those photos, sync all my devices, rip that last box of CDs still buried in the storage space. I’ll compress time and space into the smallest possible area. I’ll allow the networked connections to form, all my data to be cross-indexed. I’ll reduce the length and breadth of my life into a searchable, geo-tagged nugget.

Recently, I reread “A Visit From the Goon Squad,” by Jennifer Egan, which is about, among other things, how music attaches itself to memories and calls them up, preserving them by association, enabling a kind of emotional time travel. The ability to store our data externally helps us imagine that our time is limitless, our space infinite. It frees us, in theory at least, from the defining constraints of being human, and sometimes that freaks us out.

It strikes me that the current fetishization of analog technology has less to do with nostalgia than it does with an urge to slow down the transfer of data from the internal to the external, from the individual to the collective, and to make it all less instant, less ephemeral, less interchangeable, and more tangible, more linear and more contextual. “People my age are products of a culture of the capital-F Future,” William Gibson said in 2010. “The younger you are, the less you are a product of that. If you’re 15 or so today, I suspect that you inhabit a sort of endless digital Now, a state of atemporality enabled by our increasingly efficient communal prosthetic memory.” Maybe our desire to digitize and archive every little thing is not proof of a fear of forgetting. It’s a manifestation of our urge to remember how to remember.

Last session, we learned about the structural layer of web pages by being introduced to the HyperText Markup Language - a collection of codes, embedded in a document, that explain the meaning or desired formatting of the marked text. Our homework for the weekend was to take some basic HTML code and modify it slightly so that it will work for us as OUR code. The result in subtask 02.01 is a basic webpage of our own. This session, we will learn about Cascading Style Sheets - a way of describing, using instructions buried in the document, what the document is supposed to look like. We will take the page we created for subtask 02.01 and add a link to a supporting set of CSS instructions, so that the page will not only mean what we want it to mean (the HTML in subtask 02.01), but will also look the way we want it to look (the CSS in subtask 02.02)

Developer Steven Wittens recently did just that when he redesigned his Acko.net website. Wittens turned to the 3-D features in CSS 3 — with a little JavaScript help — to create a visually stunning 3-D page header. [Wired Magazine]

For anyone to use ITS systems and services for unauthorized purposes, as defined in the documents governing use of these systems and services, is at least inappropriate and a violation of University policy, and may in certain circumstances be illegal. In addition, ITS systems are part of an international network of computers, and consequently must protect other sites from the misuse of our resources to attack their systems.

Each summer the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University swings open the doors of our big yellow house to welcome a group of talented and curious students as full-time interns - Berkterns! - who are passionate about the promise of the Internet. Finding connected and complementary research inquiries among their diverse backgrounds, students represent all levels of study, are being trained in disciplines across the board, and come from universities all over the world to tackle issues related to the core of Berkman’s research agenda, including law, technology, innovation, and knowledge; the relationship between Internet and civic activity; and technology, law, and development.

Summer interns jump head first into the swirl of the Berkman universe, where they are deeply and substantively involved in the operation of our research projects and efforts. Becoming invaluable contributors to the Center’s operation and success, interns conduct collaborative and independent research under the guidance of Berkman staff, fellows, and faculty. Specific roles, tasks, and experiences vary depending on Center needs and interns' skills; a select list of expected opportunities for Summer 2012 is below. Traditionally, the workload of each intern is primarily based under one project or suite of projects, with encouragement and flexibility to get involved in additional projects all across the Center.

In addition to joining research teams, summer interns participate in special lectures with Berkman Center faculty and fellows, engage each other through community experiences like weekly interns discussion hours, and attend Center-wide events and gatherings with members of the wider Berkman community. As well, each year interns establish new channels for fun and learning, such as organizing topical debates, establishing reading groups and book clubs, producing podcasts and videos, and hosting potlucks, cook-offs, and BBQs (fortunately for us, people share).

The word "awesome" has been thrown around to describe our internships, but don't take our word for it. Zack McCune, a summer intern from 2008, had this to say: "it has been an enchanting summer working at the berkman center for internet & society. everyday, i get to hang out with some of the most brilliant people on the planet. we talk, we write (emails), we blog, we laugh, we play rock band. and when things need to get done, we stay late hyped on free coffee and leftover food. it is a distinct honor to be considered a peer among such excellent people. and i am not just talking about the fellows, staff, and faculty, though they are all outstanding. no, i mean my peers as in my fellow interns, who are almost definitely the ripening next generation of changemakers."

Time Commitment:
Summer internships are full time positions (35 hours/week) for 10 weeks. Our Summer 2012 program runs from Monday, June 4 through Friday, August 10.

Payment:
Interns are paid $11.50 an hour, with the exception of a number of opportunities for law students who are expected to receive some version of summer public interest funding (more about these specific cases at the link for law students below).

Please be forewarned that payment may not be sufficient to cover living expenses in the Boston area. No other benefits are provided, and interns must make their own housing, insurance and transportation arrangements.

Internship opportunity

The Margaret Sanger Papers Project has offered summer internships
since 1995. Graduate and undergraduate students from universities in the U.S. and Europe have worked with the editorial staff on our microfilm, book and digital publications and received broad experience in historical research and editing. The Project is located in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village, in the History Department of New York University.

For 2012, we will be offering internships related to our book, digital, and web outreach projects. While most of our internships are arranged during the summer months, we can arranged internship during the academic year as well.

We ask that interns be familiar with IBM-based computers, using Windows, have good research skills and the ability to do careful and detailed work. A background in history, women's history, the history of medicine, and XML encoding are desirable. This is a popular program and we often receive far more applications than we can fill. Candidates for these positions are ranked based on the Project's specific needs.

Book Edition Internship

The Project is finishing up its research on Volume IV of the Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger, covering the years 1920-1966 and focusing on Sanger's efforts to create a global birth control movement. Interns will work under the supervision of editors, conducting research on specific topics, tracing people, places, events and issues covered in the documents. The research will be used to produce annotation and introductory material for the volume. Research will be conducted in the Project's offices, using the comprehensive microfilm edition and other primary sources, as well as at local libraries and with resources available on the Internet. Because we are almost finished with the volume research, we anticipate only one or two openings here
this summer.

Digital Internships

We continue work on our digital edition of Sanger's speeches and articles, focusing on texts written by Margaret Sanger from the 1940s through the 1960s. Interns will be taught to encode transcriptions using XML/TEI encoding, draft subject index entries for the documents, and conduct research to verify dates, titles, and publication information, or to identify the names of people, organizations and books mentioned in the documents. Digital interns will also work with the Project editors on copyright clearance for the texts, and will continue to search for additional Sanger texts. We anticipate having multiple internships here this summer.

We are also looking for a digital humanites programmer looking to gain experience working with TEI texts. The existing interface for the Speeches and Articles needs revisions in its display properties and we need to add additional search criteria that have been encoded to the search screen. The existing site was written using XSLT and PHP. For more information about the existing software see Matt Zimmerman's 2003 Connect article.

Web Outreach Internship

We are also looking for interns to help with our web presence for the Project, utilizing digital tools such as our Facebook site and research blog, and website analysis to draw attention to the project's work and connect with our audiences. For this internship, familiarity with history, HTML and the web is required.

I'm trying to do subtask 01.04. However, Cyberduck, Filezilla and Fetch, none of them has command line, so I can't set up password protection for public_html directory. Maybe I'm just being stupid and haven't found the right place.

I was about to pay for web hosting when I found http://www.000webhost.com/, which offers free hosting! I was sure there would be a catch, but I signed up anyway. I've been using it for about a week and it's been great so far. Really easy to get set up and literally free. I bought my domain name at godaddy.com and set it up with that. It doesn't come with a ton of extras but it does come with 5 email accounts, so it's perfect for a personal portfolio type of website.

When you or your team has completed the task, you or one member of a team will store it in a single password protected directory. Each of the members of the team will place a hyperlink to it on their respective web sites (the individual storing it will have a relative link to it, the others will have absolute links to the finished task). When it's ready for me to download and grade, send me a note telling me to retrieve it from your websites.

Past experience, however, tells us that some of you all may have difficulty making this happen. South Korea's "Game Shutdown Law" Takes Effect

As an international student from South Korea, I would like to talk about a article from South Korea.

Nowadays, Korean gamers,whether it is PC or console gaming,got angry with Game Shutdown law by the Korean Govenmment.

The new law prevent children playing games because playing games till late at night affect their studyng and for obvious reasons,it has had a bad effect on their performance in school.

I found one article from a US website, Gamasutra,
This Game Shutdown Law has never existed in other countries.

As of this week, children aged under 16 in South Korea are barred from playing online games between midnight and 6:00 am.

South Korea's government has long been worried about the prevalence of online gaming addiction in its tech-savvy country. Fearing the effects that high levels of addiction could have on its future (specifically, everyone failing school), the government passed a Shutdown Law in April this year which would ban all gamers aged under 16 from playing online games between midnight and 6:00 am. Earlier this week, the law went into effect.

The idea behind this law is that it'll push teenagers towards spending the late night sleeping rather than gaming, meaning that the government thinks twilight gaming poses so great a threat that parental control of power cables and ethernet wires isn't enough of a deterrent. While this law is offensive to the civil liberties of children, it is true that this group need sleep more than most; trying to judge whose responsibility the protection of that sleep-time is invokes a whole heap of ideological questions to which everyone will have a different answer. For now, though, the South Korean government's opinion is crystal clear.

NC State is currently in the process of building their new Hunt Library that is located on their centennial campus. What is so amazing about this is the technology they are using to retrieve books. The bookbot works inside the stacks (which will now be closed to the public) and automatically retrieves books for patrons after they enter in what they want. This automated book delivery system is going to allow them to store 9 times more books. I am impressed with the way they are integrating technology to make their library modern and competitive.

WiFi may damage sperm quality

WiFi technology may cause a major handicap for men hoping to build a family: sperm damage.

A team of Argentine scientists led by Conrado Avendano of the Nascentis Center for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba found that placing drops of semen from healthy men under a laptop connected wirelessly to the Internet kills or maims the little swimmers.

The scientists reported their findings this month in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility.

After four hours next to the WiFi-connected computer, 25% of the sperm had stopped moving and nine percent showed DNA damage.

By comparison, semen kept at the same temperature but away from the computer showed just a 14% drop in mobility and only 3% suffered DNA damage.

Semen placed under the computer without the WiFi connected did not experience significant levels of sperm damage, the study says.

Avendano blames the discrepancy on the electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless communication.

"Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the Internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality," Avendano and his team wrote in this month's article, Reuters reports.

The study is not the first to sound an alarm over the potential of mobile communications technology to undermine sperm health.

A Canadian study reported last year also found evidence indicating that wireless radiation caused DNA damage in sperm.

Computers also wreck havoc on semen just by being hot.

A 2004 American study found that placing a portable computer on the user's lap could boost scrotum temperature by nearly three degrees. Scientists have established that heat damages sperm.

Facebook recently conducted a study in which they found the average distance between any two users on Facebook. Using an algorithm to find sample paths between users and then average all of them together they found that the average distance was 4.74 people, which is less that the 6 degrees of separation that was proposed by Stanley Milgram back in 1967. The number was even lower in the United States where over half the people over the age of 13 are on Facebook which dropped the average distance down to 4.37 people.

Why is Veteran's Day celebrated on 11 November?

It goes back to World War I. The Allied powers a signed a cease-fire agreement with Germany at Rethondes, France on November 11, 1918, bringing World War I to a close. Between the wars, November 11 was commemorated as Armistice Day in the United States, Great Britain, and France. After World War II, the holiday was recognized as a day of tribute to veterans of both world wars. Beginning in 1954, the United States designated November 11 as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all U.S. wars.

But why this date?
The Allies' armistice terms were first presented to German negotiators on 8 November 1918. Alarmed at the severity of the terms, the Germans lodged formal protests before reluctantly signing revised terms at 5 a.m. on 11 November; the armistice was to come into effect six hours later, at 11 a.m.

But the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month sounds significant. Was it?

Martinstag (11. November)
November 11 is a special day in the U.S., Canada, and German-speaking Europe, but when North Americans are observing Veterans Day/Remembrance Day, most Austrians and German Catholics are celebrating a different kind of holiday.

The Feast of Saint Martin, the Germanic Martinstag celebration, is more like Halloween and Thanksgiving rolled into one. Martinstag or Martini commemorates Sankt Martin (c. 317-397), Bishop of Tours, one of the most revered European saints. The best-known legend connected with Saint Martin is the dividing of the cloak (die Mantelteilung), when Martin, then a soldier in the Roman army, tore his cloak in two to share it with a freezing beggar at Amiens.

In the past, Martinstag was celebrated as the end of the harvest season (thanksgiving). For workers and the poor it was a time when they had a chance to enjoy some of the bounty and get a few crumbs from the nobles' table (“einige Krümel vom reichgedeckten Tisch”). Today in many parts of Europe the feast is still celebrated by processions of children with candle-lit lanterns (Martinslaternen) and a banquet of roast goose (die Martinsgans).

In former times, Martini was the “official” start of winter and the 40-day Christmas fast. Today Martinstag is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season in German Europe.

Tauftag Martin Luthers (11. November)
Although Martinstag is a Catholic observance, German Protestants also consider November 11th a special day. On this date the Protestant reformer (Reformator) Martin Luther (1483-1546) was christened, making it his Tauftag. It is celebrated in much the same way as Martinstag:

“Jedes Jahr am 11. November feiern wir den Tauftag Martin Luthers mit Reformationsbrötchen und Lampionumzug.” (Every year on the 11th of November we celebrate the christening day of Martin Luther with Reformation rolls and lantern processions.)

In Dresden and most of Saxony (Sachsen) the traditional baked article is known as Reformationsbrot rather than -brötchen because it is a loaf weighing between 500 grams and a full Kilo.

Fasching
November 11 is also the kick-off of Fasching, Karneval and Fastnacht. For one day revelers are drawn into the streets, before the activities in carnival clubs, street and neighborhood groups, begin in earnest as the preparations for the January/February crazy days, are in full swing.

In the Alpine regions St. Martin's used to coincide with "Viehabtrieb," bringing the animals back into the villages from their summer's stay higher up and is still celebrated in some areas.

The Fasching season ends when Lent begins, thus Mardi Gras is the end of the Fasching season.

So the Armistice that ended the fighting on the Western Front in the First World War was set to begin on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that was a time and date known to German soldiers, Catholic and Protestant alike, as the start of a holiday season. It was a time they could recognize and a time that everyone could agree on.

For those of you who also like to use Mac, you can run Windows on your computer at the same time! There is a program called Parallels that allows you to run a separate operating system on a little partition of your hard drive. (Don't worry, it will help you set this up!) But don't pay full price on their website, there are lots of student discounts for this program available at websites like Academic Superstore and you can save a good deal of money and download the application without having to wait for a disk.
Once you have Parallels installed, you will need the actual Windows OS. Don't pay for it! Go down to the basement of the UL and they will install it for free. Graduate students love free. But there is more free ahead! After the nice people at the UL install your Windows 7, they can also install the entire Microsoft Office suite for free as well. So, for about $40, you have what is essentially another mini computer within your Mac.

The test is called the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale and there are many online variations that you can use. This is one of them. You Love Your iPhone. Literally.

WITH Apple widely expected to release its iPhone 5 on Tuesday, Apple addicts across the world are getting ready for their latest fix.

But should we really characterize the intense consumer devotion to the iPhone as an addiction? A recent experiment that I carried out using neuroimaging technology suggests that drug-related terms like “addiction” and “fix” aren’t as scientifically accurate as a word we use to describe our most cherished personal relationships. That word is “love.”

As a branding consultant, I have followed Apple from its early days as a cult brand to its position today as one of the most valuable, widely admired companies on earth. A few years back, I conducted an experiment to examine the similarities between some of the world’s strongest brands and the world’s greatest religions. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tests, my team looked at subjects’ brain activity as they viewed consumer images involving brands like Apple and Harley-Davidson and religious images like rosary beads and a photo of the pope. We found that the brain activity was uncannily similar when viewing both types of imagery.

This past summer, I gathered a group of 20 babies between the ages of 14 and 20 months. I handed each one a BlackBerry. No sooner had the babies grasped the phones than they swiped their little fingers across the screens as if they were iPhones, seemingly expecting the screens to come to life. It appears that a whole new generation is being primed to navigate the world of electronics in a ritualized, Apple-approved way.

Friends who have accidentally left home without their iPhones tell me they feel stressed-out, cut off and somehow un-whole. That sounds a lot like separation anxiety to me. Not long ago, I headed an effort to identify the 10 most powerful, affecting sounds in the world: I found that a vibrating phone came in third, behind only the Intel chime and the sound of a baby giggling. Phantom vibration syndrome is the term I use to describe our habit of scrambling for a cellphone we feel rippling in our pocket, only to find out we are mistaken. Similar to pressing an elevator button repeatedly in the belief that the elevator will descend sooner, we check our phones for e-mails and texts countless times a day, almost as if we can will others to text, call, e-mail or Skype us.

So are our smartphones addictive, medically speaking? Some psychologists suggest that using our iPhones and BlackBerrys may tap into the same associative learning pathways in the brain that make other compulsive behaviors — like gambling — so addictive. As with addiction to drugs or cigarettes or food, the chemical driver of this process is the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine.

Earlier this year, I carried out an fMRI experiment to find out whether iPhones were really, truly addictive, no less so than alcohol, cocaine, shopping or video games. In conjunction with the San Diego-based firm MindSign Neuromarketing, I enlisted eight men and eight women between the ages of 18 and 25. Our 16 subjects were exposed separately to audio and to video of a ringing and vibrating iPhone.

In each instance, the results showed activation in both the audio and visual cortices of the subjects’ brains. In other words, when they were exposed to the video, our subjects’ brains didn’t just see the vibrating iPhone, they “heard” it, too; and when they were exposed to the audio, they also “saw” it. This powerful cross-sensory phenomenon is known as synesthesia.

But most striking of all was the flurry of activation in the insular cortex of the brain, which is associated with feelings of love and compassion. The subjects’ brains responded to the sound of their phones as they would respond to the presence or proximity of a girlfriend, boyfriend or family member.

In short, the subjects didn’t demonstrate the classic brain-based signs of addiction. Instead, they loved their iPhones.

As we embrace new technology that does everything but kiss us on the mouth, we risk cutting ourselves off from human interaction. For many, the iPhone has become a best friend, partner, lifeline, companion and, yes, even a Valentine. The man or woman we love most may be seated across from us in a romantic Paris bistro, but his or her 8GB, 16GB or 32GB rival lies in wait inside our pockets and purses.

My best advice? Shut off your iPhone, order some good Champagne and find love and compassion the old-fashioned way.

Of all the new releases scheduled between Wednesday the 12th and Friday the 14th (i.e., over 200 new features for the iOS 5 upgrade and just as many new additions to the iPhone 4S model), one of the most publicity-provoking has been Siri--that is, "your humble personal assistant".

Siri is the perfect illustration of the conceptual Web 3.0, also known as the Semantic Web, first coined by pioneer Tim Berners-Lee. By "semantic", he suggests that the Internet--for example, search engines--will not only know how to retrieve information when queried but can do so on their own to benefit human users. In other words, computers will be able to read the "gist" of our needs instead of requiring explicit instructions.

Then go back to the CSS validation page and select the http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ to choose the option to validate against CSS3 standards. It should work.
