Hi! Today I shared two interesting websites with the class:
The first was IPTools which is site that combines a lot of the tools like TraceRoute that we used in Unix into one easy to use site.
The second website was TheSixyOne which is a music website where all the music is uploaded from the artist, so if you register you can download most of it for free!

Too many chapters?
Question:
Since I've formatted a collection of poems, and each "chapter" is really a poem heading, should a chapter always begin at the start of every page? Many poems are only half a page long.
Response:
Find appropriate places in your collections of poems and declare the collection divided up into part 1, part 2, and part 3. Use the part name for the header and for the ToC. Your document will then have a three part ToC and won't end up with a ToC entry for each page.
The goal is to exercise your command over the document markup tool, so we may have to modify the source document in order to show our skills.
No section 4?
Question:
Also, I only have three sections, and the gradesheet asks for the title of each section in the odd pages in Section 4. Should I include it?
Response:
That was an artifact from a previous version of task 03. Start your headers with the start of the document (whether that is section 1, chapter 1, or whatever it is called). It will probably be at least in the third section of your document (after the section with the title and the section with the ToC).
Page numbers in footers
Question:
I've got it where it shows them on odd and even footers, but where there are section breaks and no actual page it leaves them blank. I can't seem to figure out how to remedy this.
Response:
Don't try to remedy it, because this is how the program works - it won't put a number on a page that has nothing else on it. Just be sure that both your odd page and even page footers have page numbers in them.

When is task 03 due?
Question:
am i correct in my assumption that task 3 is due tonite?
Response:
No, it is due Wednesday night. You all would be well served to have a nearly done copy ready to go over in the lab tomorrow. If you have it done and have already posted it on your website, come to the lab ready to help one or more of your peers.
Question about headings, headers, and tables of contents
Question:
I was trying to get ahead of the game and finish my task, but I ran
into some problems. I chose to edit Heart of Darkness by Joseph
Conrad. However, the book is divided into three parts labeled as I,II,
and III which becomes a problem when trying to complete the part of
the assignment dealing with headers and the table of contents. I have
no section 4 and beyond for the headers and no heading 3 for the table
of contents. I have basically everything done except for these
subtasks and would rather not start over. What should I do?
Response:
I created the instructions trying to cover all possibilities, but there are always exceptions. Since the goal is to show that you can use the tools, all I need to see is that you can. I think, from your note, that you are using the PPT as a guide to the task. The PPT is an example that is not quite the same as your task. For example, in cell B17 on the specs sheet, it says
Format the name of each section that precedes the chapters of the document and the title of each chapter in Heading 2 style (these will be used later for the real table of contents). If you have any text sections that follow the chapters, format them in the same Heading 2 style. You will have multiple sections and chapter titles to format appropriately. You can productively use your CNTL+F tool here. If your work also has chapter numbers, format each chapter number in Heading 1 style. |
But do follow the guidance on the spec sheet for your task. Look at the PPT for pointers how things might be done, but don't follow it as guidance.
